BBC: In the Studio: Helle Nebelong

posted in: News

Danish landscape architect Helle Nebelong is a pioneer of the natural playground movement. Natural playgrounds are made of natural materials, rather than plastics, but they also encourage creativity and independence rather than rule-based games.

In the Studio follows Helle as she faces her biggest challenge yet – designing one of America’s largest natural playgrounds, at Colene Hoose School in Normal, Illinois.

The broadcast covers the process from the first sketches three years ago to the final inauguration October 2023. Meet Helle initially at The Nature Playground in Copenhagen, join her walk in the forest with her partner, Timoteo Ebikon, listen to Helle meeting with Robin Brailsford, LithoMosaics, about the River Garden fish mosaic details, and when Helle visits the park August 2022 talking plantings with the contractor Adam Bienenstock. Finally listen to a few sound clips from the opening in October last year with Charlie Jobson, who donated $5 million to the 16-acre natural play park named after his parents. Presenter: Poppy Sebag-Montefiore Executive Producer: Stephen Hughes
